1970s Large Sterling Silver Tapio Wirkkala "Omena" Pendant
An exceptional necklace by celebrated Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala produced by Kultakeskus Oy. Designed in the early 1970s, the piece was titled "omena" or "apple". The middle layer of the pendant has a whimsical hinged movement. Details such as the hammering of the silver and the primitive "cut-out" style of the silver have all been masterfully executed.
The largest size seen in this design, its bold scale emphasizes the beautiful clarity of design. The piece is striking in its modernity while still harkening back to primitive jewellery design which inspired Wirkkala. The original chain and remarkable condition make the piece all the more special.
