Finland (1915-1985)

Tapio Wirkkala was a central figure in the development of Scandinavian Design. As an artist and innovator, he worked in multiple mediums including wood, glass, porcelain and silver. His illustrious career included a long-term partnership with Finnish design firm Iitala where he created iconic work in glass.

Aided by his formal education in graphic design, Wirkkala had a gift for translating images and forms that he observed into his art. He constantly strove to be in harmony with his chosen material believing that "all materials have their own unwritten laws". Above all else, Wirkkala was inspired by nature, and the basic laws of natural forms which he used to formulate beautiful objects that were also functional.
